One local figure (aggregator estimate). One aggregator, Homeyou, lists a typical San Antonio repair range of $130–$350 (updated October 2026); it does not publish its method. It sits close to Fixr's national $150–$350, but treat it as a rough signal, not a local price list.

Where the two national guides disagree, both figures are shown. None of these numbers is a price from any company, and no source here says San Antonio labor runs higher or lower than elsewhere.

Consumer rights

Before you approve a price

Your rights in Texas. The Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act lists as deceptive any false or misleading statement about the need for parts, replacement or repair, and claiming work was done or parts were replaced when they weren't (Bus. & Com. Code §17.46(b)(13) and (22)). Ask for a written estimate, an itemized invoice and your old parts back. Complaints can go to the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. This is general information, not legal advice.

In practice, that means three questions on the first call. Is there a trip or diagnostic fee, and how much? Will I get a written estimate before work starts? Will the final invoice list parts and labor separately? Clear answers make one company easy to compare with the next.

Signing at home? Texas law (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 601) generally lets you cancel a home-solicited sale over $25 until midnight of the third business day after you sign; repairs you asked for may be treated differently. Look for the cancellation notice. This is general information, not legal advice.

Texas doesn't license garage door companies (TDLR has no garage door program). New outlets or circuits for an opener are electrical work for a licensed electrician. San Antonio asks contractors to register with Development Services before it issues permits; the city says contractors register before permits are issued.

Be careful with ads that promise a very low service-call fee, map listings with no local address, look-alike company names and requests for cash up front. The BBB warned about these patterns in 2026, and in May 2026 the FTC filed a complaint alleging a network of fake listings that used "garage door repair" search terms (allegations, not findings). A low advertised trip fee is not the price of the repair.

Cost drivers

What drives garage door repair cost

  • Spring type and count. Fixr lists torsion springs, which sit on a shaft above the door, higher than extension springs, which run beside the tracks. Many doors use two springs. Ask for a price on one and on both. See spring repair in San Antonio.
  • Door size. A 16×7 double door is larger and heavier than an 8×7 single, and wider doors or 3-car layouts usually need bigger springs and hardware. Expect the price to follow the size.
  • Insulation and materials. Insulated doors, window inserts and carriage-style overlays add weight and cost, and they change which panels and springs fit. In a city that averages about 122 days a year at 90°F or hotter (NOAA 1991–2020), many owners of attached garages price insulation.
  • Hail-dent panel matching. A dented section on a door that is still made may be a panel swap. On a discontinued model, matching can be hard, which can push the job toward a new door. See panel replacement and hail damage.
  • After-hours timing. Evening, weekend and emergency visits often carry a surcharge, which Fixr puts at $100–$300 (Jan 2025). See emergency repair.
  • Trip fee. A service call fee of $50–$75 (Fixr) may be separate or folded into the repair.
  • Permits and historic districts. Inside San Antonio city limits, the city's No Permit Required list includes replacing existing doors, and its repair-permit form says like-for-like door replacement needs no permit. Changing the size of the opening does need a permit. Alamo Heights lists replacing doors among work that needs a permit. In historic districts like King William and Monte Vista, exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Office of Historic Preservation. Rules differ by city; ask the installer or call your city. A Certificate of Appropriateness can steer you toward a wood-paneled or similar door, which can cost more than a basic steel one.
  • A new circuit for an opener. If the garage has no outlet where the opener goes, that is electrical work for a licensed electrician, and it adds to the total. See opener repair and installation.

Repair or replace

Repair or replace?

Most problems end in a repair. These are the signs a new door or opener is worth pricing too.

Usually a repair

  • One broken spring, a frayed cable or a door that slipped off its track (see off-track and cable repair)
  • Noisy rollers and dry hinges, which a tune-up often covers
  • Photo eyes out of line or a keypad that quit (see sensor and keypad repair)
  • One dented section on a door model that is still made

Worth pricing a replacement

  • An old opener that keeps failing, or one you want to swap for a quieter belt drive or battery backup
  • Several hail-damaged sections, or panels that can't be matched
  • A door that keeps needing repairs, or a hot attached garage you want to insulate
  • A style or color change, which may need HOA approval (see new door installation)

San Antonio's median home was built in 1985 (Census ACS 2020–2024), so many doors and openers here have been repaired more than once. Homeowners policies often cover sudden hail damage, subject to your deductible and policy terms; check with your insurer. If hail caused the damage, photograph it and note the storm date before deciding. Many communities, including Stone Oak, The Dominion, Timberwood Park and Fair Oaks Ranch, have architectural committees; get written approval before changing door style or color. TDI windstorm certification applies to 14 coastal counties and part of Harris County, not Bexar County.

FAQ

Garage door cost questions

How much does garage door spring replacement cost in San Antonio?

Fixr lists extension springs at $120–$250 and torsion springs at $200–$350 (Jan 2025). This Old House puts spring replacement at $300–$540, averaging about $420 (Mar 2026). These are published national estimates, not quotes. Spring size, whether one or both springs are replaced and after-hours timing move the price.

What is a garage door trip fee or service call fee?

Fixr lists a typical service call fee of $50–$75 (Jan 2025). Some companies fold it into the repair and some charge it even if you don't go ahead. Ask about it on the first call, and ask whether it is credited toward the repair.

Why does emergency garage door repair cost more?

Evening, weekend and holiday visits fall outside normal hours, so many companies add a surcharge. Fixr puts it at $100–$300 (Jan 2025). If the door is closed and secure, waiting for regular hours can cost less. Ask about after-hours fees before work starts.

How much does a new garage door opener cost installed?

Fixr puts an installed opener at $300–$600, averaging about $480 (Jan 2025). If the garage needs a new outlet or circuit, that is electrical work for a licensed electrician and adds to the total. Battery backup is optional in Texas, so ask whether a quote includes it.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

Most springs, cables, rollers and off-track doors are repairs in the low hundreds in published guides. Replacement is worth pricing when several sections are damaged, panels can't be matched or the door keeps needing work. Fixr puts a new sectional steel door at $700–$2,000 installed, averaging about $993 (Jan 2025).
