Signs a panel needs attention
Hail dents are easiest to see in low, side-on light.
- Rows of round dents across the steel
- A section creased or bowed at a seam
- Cracks near hinges or at the bottom edge
- The door rubs, binds or jerks after a storm
- Gaps along the bottom seal or sides
- Chipped paint with bare steel showing
- A bottom section bent where a car or bin hit it
San Antonio Garage Door Experts is a free quote-matching service, not a garage door company. You describe the problem once, independent local garage door companies reply with quotes, and the company you choose does the work. Companies may pay to receive requests.
What a technician typically does
Methods vary by company. A careful panel job usually follows these steps.
1. Inspect the whole door
Every section, hinge, roller, track and the bottom seal is checked, not just the dented face.
2. Identify the model
The make, model, section height and color are read from the door label or measured, so a matching section can be ordered.
3. Price repair vs replace
You get a written estimate for the section or sections, and often a full-door price for comparison.
4. Swap the section
With the door secured and spring tension handled safely, the damaged section comes out and the new one goes in.
5. Balance and test
The door is checked for balance, travel and sealing, and the opener's auto-reverse and photo eyes are tested.
Hail in Bexar County: what the records show
Most large-hail reports in Bexar County come in March, April and May (NOAA Storm Events, 1995–2026). A few storms stand out in the record:
- On April 12, 2016, hail up to 4.5 inches fell on northwest San Antonio; NOAA and the Insurance Council of Texas put damage near $1.36 billion.
- NOAA lists 5.5-inch hail near Sayers and China Grove on May 3, 2021.
Report locations are approximate. Many hail dents are cosmetic, while a creased or cracked section can affect how the door runs.
One panel or a full door?
Sectional doors are built from horizontal sections, usually four on a 7-foot door. A single section can often be replaced if the same model is still made. That works best when one or two sections are damaged and the door is otherwise in good shape.
A full door tends to make more sense when the model is discontinued, three or more sections are dented, or springs and rollers are also due. In San Antonio, the median home was built in 1985 (Census ACS 2020–2024), so many doors on older homes may be past the point where matching sections are easy to find. If a full door looks likely, see new garage door installation.
Matching sections
Ask the company to confirm the new section matches the profile (raised panel, flush or carriage style), thickness, insulation and color. A new section can look brighter than sun-faded ones for a while.
Insurance, HOAs and permits
Insurance
Homeowners policies often cover sudden hail damage, subject to your deductible and policy terms; check with your insurer. Photograph the door and note the storm date before any work, and keep written estimates.
HOA approval
Many San Antonio communities (Stone Oak, The Dominion, Timberwood Park, Fair Oaks Ranch) have architectural committees; get written approval before changing door style or color. The Dominion HOA says any exterior change requires ACC approval. A same-look panel swap may not need review, but ask first.
Permits and historic districts
Inside San Antonio city limits, the city's No Permit Required list includes replacing existing doors, and its repair-permit form says like-for-like door replacement needs no permit. Changing the size of the opening does need a permit. Alamo Heights lists replacing doors among work that needs a permit. In historic districts like King William and Monte Vista, exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Office of Historic Preservation. Rules differ by city; ask the installer or call your city.
The city's 2012 historic design guidelines (9.B.i) ask that replacement garage doors be "compatible with those found on historic garages in the district (e.g., wood paneled)"; when the door is not visible from the street, "modern paneled garage doors may be acceptable."
What panel and hail repairs cost
Use these national figures as a baseline for comparing written estimates.
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dents / bent sections (hail) | $100–$700 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| Panel replacement | $150–$1,000 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| New sectional steel door, installed | $700–$2,000 (avg ≈ $993) | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| Service call / trip fee | $50–$75 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
Published national estimates, not quotes (Fixr, Jan 2025; This Old House, Mar 2026). San Antonio-area quotes vary.
The number depends on how many sections are damaged, door width (an 8×7 single or a 16×7 double), insulation, windows, and whether a matching section exists. See the San Antonio garage door cost guide for the full table and a calculator, or read hail damage on your garage door: repair, replace or claim?
Signing at your door
Texas law (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 601) generally lets you cancel a home-solicited sale over $25 until midnight of the third business day after you sign; repairs you asked for may be treated differently. This is general information, not legal advice.
Safety and when it is urgent
Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. Leave spring and cable work to a trained technician. Swapping a section means working around spring tension, so this is not a DIY job.
Openers made since Jan 1, 1993 must reverse within 2 seconds of touching an obstruction and have secondary entrapment protection such as photo eyes (16 CFR 1211). Test the auto-reverse monthly.
When it is urgent
Cosmetic dents can wait for a few quotes. A door that won't close after a storm, a section that has buckled or pulled away from its hinges, or a door hanging crooked is different. Leave it where it is, keep people and cars clear, and see emergency garage door repair. If a cable or roller came loose, off-track repair explains what to expect.
Questions to ask the companies that reply
- Is the estimate written and itemized, with any trip fee shown?
- Is a matching section available for my exact model, and how long will it take to arrive?
- What would a full door cost by comparison?
- Will you note the storm damage in writing for my insurer?
- What are the warranty terms on the section and labor, in writing?
- Is your company registered with the City of San Antonio where that applies?
Texas doesn't license garage door companies (TDLR has no garage door program). New outlets or circuits for an opener are electrical work for a licensed electrician. Inside San Antonio, the city says contractors register with Development Services before permits are issued (DSD, 210-207-1111).
Panel replacement and hail damage FAQ
Can I replace just one garage door panel?
Often, yes, if the door model is still made and a matching section is available in the same size, style and color. A company will need the make, model and section size, usually from the label on the door's edge. If the model is discontinued or several sections are damaged, a full door can cost about the same and look more uniform.
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to a garage door?
Homeowners policies often cover sudden hail damage, subject to your deductible and policy terms; check with your insurer. Photograph the door and note the storm date before any work starts. A written, itemized estimate from a garage door company can help you compare the repair cost with your deductible.
Are small hail dents worth fixing?
Many hail dents are cosmetic. If the door opens, closes and seals normally, small dents may not need urgent work. Dents that crease a section, crack the steel near a hinge, bend the bottom section or bow a panel can affect how the door runs, and those are worth having checked.
How much does garage door panel replacement cost?
Fixr (Jan 2025) lists panel replacement at $150–$1,000 and dent or bent-section repair at $100–$700. These are published national estimates, not quotes. Door width, insulation, windows and whether a matching section exists all move the price. Ask each company for an itemized written estimate.
