How Much Is a New Garage Door in San Antonio?

A new garage door is one of the larger repairs on a house, and the quotes can be far apart. Two doors that look alike from the street can differ in steel thickness, insulation, windows, hardware and how much work the opening needs. This guide explains what drives the price of a new door in San Antonio, TX and the nearby towns, using published national ranges, and what to check before you order.

The short answer: published ranges

These are published national estimates, not quotes. San Antonio-area quotes vary.

The door range is for a standard sectional steel door. A larger, insulated, wood, glass or custom design may quote above it, and a new opener is a separate line. For repair prices and a planning calculator, see the garage door repair cost page.

What changes the price of a new door

Size

A single door is often about 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall; a double is often about 16 by 7. Taller doors, wider doors and three-car layouts cost more, and some homes have two singles instead of one double. Measure the opening, or let the installer measure, before comparing quotes.

Material and construction

Steel is the most common choice. Price climbs with heavier gauges, extra layers and wood or wood-look finishes. Real wood doors usually cost more and need more upkeep. Ask each company for the exact model so you can compare like with like.

Insulation

San Antonio averages about 122 days a year at 90°F or hotter and about 18 at 100°F (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), and 2023 set a record with 75 days at 100°F or more (National Weather Service). If the garage is a workshop, a gym or sits under a bedroom, an insulated door may make it more comfortable. Insulation adds cost; whether it pays back depends on how you use the space, so treat it as a comfort choice rather than a guaranteed saving.

Windows, style and color

Carriage-house styles, decorative hardware, window inserts and special colors all add to the price, and they are also the details an HOA is most likely to care about.

Hardware, springs and the opener

A new door often needs new springs sized to its weight, plus new tracks and rollers. If the opener is old or underpowered for a heavier door, the quote may include a new one. Ask whether the old door and parts are hauled away and whether that is included.

Changes to the opening

Swapping a door in the same opening is the simplest job. Widening an opening, or turning two singles into one double, involves framing work and changes the permit picture (see below).

Repair or replace?

Replacement is not always the answer. If the door is solid and one part failed, such as a spring, a cable or a single panel, a repair often makes more sense. Price a new door when hail has dented several sections, the matching panel is no longer made, the door keeps needing repairs, or you want insulation or a new look. Ask companies for both quotes side by side. Our pages on panel replacement and hail damage and new garage door installation cover both paths.

Age is part of it. The median San Antonio home was built in 1985, and 58.7% of homes are one-unit detached houses (Census ACS 2020–2024). Many of those garages are on their second or third door; others in newer north and far-west subdivisions still have the door the builder installed.

Rules to check before you order

Permits, HOAs and historic districts

Inside San Antonio city limits, the city's No Permit Required list includes replacing existing doors, and its repair-permit form says like-for-like door replacement needs no permit. Changing the size of the opening does need a permit. Alamo Heights lists replacing doors among work that needs a permit. In historic districts like King William and Monte Vista, exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Office of Historic Preservation. Rules differ by city; ask the installer or call your city. San Antonio's Development Services line is 210-207-1111.

Historic districts. The city's historic design guidelines (2012) ask that replacement garage doors be "compatible with those found on historic garages in the district (e.g., wood paneled)". When the door is not visible from the street, "modern paneled garage doors may be acceptable". Ask the Office of Historic Preservation before you order.

HOAs. Many San Antonio communities, including Stone Oak, The Dominion, Timberwood Park and Fair Oaks Ranch, have architectural committees. The Dominion's HOA says any exterior change requires ACC approval. Get written approval before changing door style or color, and keep a copy.

Wind rating. New doors carry a label showing their design wind pressure. Keep it. TDI windstorm certification applies to 14 coastal counties and part of Harris County, not Bexar County, so it is not part of a San Antonio-area door job.

Electrical. Texas doesn't license garage door companies (TDLR has no garage door program). New outlets or circuits for an opener are electrical work for a licensed electrician.

How to compare new-door quotes

  • The exact door model, size, steel gauge or material, and insulation type
  • Whether new springs, tracks, rollers and weatherstripping are included
  • Whether the opener is reused, adjusted or replaced
  • Haul-away of the old door, and any trip fee
  • Who handles HOA paperwork or a historic-district application, if needed
  • Warranty terms for the door, the parts and the labor, in writing
  • A written estimate and, at the end, an itemized invoice

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new garage door cost in San Antonio?

Fixr's published national estimate (January 2025) for a new sectional steel door, installed, is about $700 to $2,000, with an average near $993. Larger, insulated, wood or custom doors may quote higher, and a new opener is extra. San Antonio-area quotes vary, so compare written estimates.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in San Antonio?

Inside San Antonio city limits, the No Permit Required list includes replacing existing doors, and the repair-permit form says like-for-like door replacement needs no permit. Changing the size of the opening does need a permit, and historic districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness. Is an insulated garage door worth it in San Antonio?

It depends on how you use the garage. With about 122 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter, an insulated door may make a garage workshop or a room above the garage more comfortable. It costs more up front, so treat it as a comfort choice and ask for quotes with and without insulation.
